Our History

It would be difficult to discuss the history of American West without first going back to the founder, Joshua Brown. Josh started in the air freight industry in 1972 and worked in the corporate offices of Air Land Air Freight and Jet Air Freight from 1972 – 1975. In 1975 Josh joined a small 2-office air freight forwarder company called Right-O-Way. As the Executive Vice President, Josh was responsible for sales and operations. Right-O-Way grew each year and reached $20 Million by 1983 when he purchased the company. As Chairman, CEO and President, Josh oversaw Right-O-Ways growth from $20million to $60 million in four years. Right-O-Way was the largest privately held air freight forwarder in the United States by 1987 when the company was sold to Day and Ross Trucking in Canada. Josh agreed to a 5-year non-compete agreement and left the transportation industry. In 1989 Josh bought a case good furniture manufacturing company named Smith Furniture. Smith Furniture was located in Corona, California and employed 150 people. While Josh sincerely enjoyed making furniture, he was excited to get back into transportation. In 1992, Josh purchased 3 small furniture carriers that picked up for Smith Furniture and American West was started.

American West began as a furniture carrier and remains a specialized carrier today providing a series of services identified herein. The knowledge Josh gained through the air freight industry and furniture manufacturing is the core of American West today. Understanding what a furniture manufacturer or importer requires is an important part of American West. On-time pickups and claims-free service is the focus of American West.

American West has always provided home delivery through an extensive agent network. But in 2012 American West was selected by several large Costco vendors, and in 2013 American West was also selected by Overstock as a key, premier furniture carrier for their white glove customers. As a result, American West now delivers thousands of shipments each month to retail stores and into our customer’s homes.

American West is a major carrier for office furniture manufacturers and is a board member of OFDA. Three of the largest office furniture manufacturers in the world rely on American West to deliver their office furniture products to their installers throughout the Western United States and Texas.

American West today receives ocean containers from major importers and provides warehousing, cross docking and shipping for importers, manufacturers, retail stores, e-commerce and final mile delivery throughout the United States.
